    Re: Matooke

This is a matooke SOS. Banange help out a sister in need of matooke for X-mas in CA!!

On a more serious note, the Ugandans I met in the US recently (in both Richmond, VA and Boston, MA) buy and eat a kinda fat plantain. I was informed it is grown in Hawaii. When steamed, it looks like matooke and tastes a little bit like the real stuff... (I am not a matooke fan, so I didn't really take much notice of the taste). U can find it in Latino food stores.

On my way in, I carried real matooke, yams, sweet potatoes, ntula, etc for some relatives. The stuff never made it beyond customs at JFK!!

lol... now Kaks.... how did you think you were going to cross borders with produce?

Yes.... you seem more informed than I am on the Matooke in boston.  I definately know it is from Latin stores and in Waltham (a residential suburb west of Boston- The Kampala of USA), some latin store keepers will even label it Matooke.  It looks nothing like the real thing but I guess when you cook it it comes close.... BUT still not the same.

Ugandans in Boston are constantly looking for the best alternative and this is the best they have been able to do... but there is nothing like the real thing- only found in Uganda....lol... and please don't try to fly it in!!!

Hehehe Finally. I knew it was a long shot but I tried it anyway. For some1 who usually travels light to be given 100lbs of check-in baggage allowance, I had to find something 2 carry...Wink
